TP63 gene encodes for a protein of 680 amino acids called tumor protein p63, which is a member of the p53 family. This protein is a sequence-specific DNA binding transcriptional activator or repressor that is essential in the development and maintenance of stratified epithelial tissues. p63 is important in the development of the limbs, facial features, urinary system, and other organs and tissues. It is expressed notably in the heart, kidney, placenta, prostate, skeletal muscle, testis and thymus, although the precise isoform varies according to tissue type.
