Dr. Laila Bastaki is the Director of the Kuwait Medical Genetics Centre. Her interest in human genetics began in 1983 when she joined the Human Genetics Institute at the Heidelberg University in Germany. She was responsible for initiating communications with other genetic centers in USA and Europe and establishing several protocols covering the most common genetic disorders in Kuwait. She established the neuromuscular genetic registry in Kuwait in 2006 and the Neonatal Screening Program in Kuwait in 2005. She was awarded the United Arab Emirates Health Foundation Prize by the WHO in recognition of outstanding contribution to health development for the year 2013.
