MMP3 gene encodes a zinc-dependent endopeptidase named Stromelysin-1, which belongs to the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of proteins. Stromelysin-1 is involved in the breakdown of fibronectin, laminin, collagens III, IV, IX, and X, and cartilage proteoglycans. It plays a critical role in wound repair, progression of atherosclerosis, and tumor initiation.Mutations in MMP3 are associated with coronary heart disease 6, arthritis, and different types of cancers, including colorectal, breast, ovarian, lung, bladder, liver, and renal cancer.
